40 Thankfulness – Kindness

January 23, 2024

‘Kindness is the most genuine gesture of beauty.’

Over time, I find myself falling out of love with many traditions and celebrations. Today, only two remain that I really, really enjoy: the Day of the Dead and the Christmas season. However, a few years ago, I was intrigued by the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States and Canada; I find it a very cool tradition.

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, and not because I’m a wannabe, but today, my journal is filled with thanks for the experiences of this year, which has been one of the most challenging in my life. Today is not the time for my drama; there will be another day for that, but I would like to share that my deepest gratitude goes towards the kindness of those who, without knowing me, have helped me so much in this process I decided to undertake.

If there is a virtue I would like to have, it would be kindness. The word ‘kindness’ comes from the Latin ‘amabilitas’ and means ‘the quality of being able to inspire or deserve love.’ Its lexical components are: ‘love,’ ‘able’ (that can), plus the suffix ‘-ness’ (quality). I think it’s such a cool word, but what feels even cooler is when someone is kind.

I am blessed to have a mom who embodies what it means to be kind. She’s one of the kindest people I know, not because she’s my mom. I would love to be as kind as she is.

I love it when people are kind to me, and this year, I have received tremendous acts of kindness. At the beginning of the year, I was emotionally very low, and thanks to the kindness of a great friend, I received one of the most beautiful gifts. He invited us to visit his town, and at first, I hesitated a bit because I didn’t want to neglect my therapeutic process, and above all, I didn’t want to be surrounded by more people. I felt so bad that I just wanted to lock myself in, but this friend insisted, and I managed to get out of my emotional cave.

My partner was happy because he was motivated by the idea of eating delicious things, so we embarked on the journey. Today I can say it has been one of the best trips of this year. I never imagined what that trip would reveal to me. I enjoyed every second and felt at home as if my family were there.

The journey began by visiting the family winery, and what a cool experience it was! The winery was a spectacular place, and its wine was super delicious. Of course, we ate exquisitely all the time. We had never eaten so much in so few days. We experienced what it means to “go for tapas”, attended a concert in the most fantastic cathedral I’ve ever been to, and had a wonderful family afternoon with board games, incredible food, laughter, and exciting conversations. We walked a lot to explore the place; it was a feast for the soul.

Meeting people who open the doors of their homes and families is one of the greatest gifts you can receive when you are far from your own. I wanted to pause time for the first time and not let the trip end. All the members of that family were infinitely kind, but the most beautiful moment was saying goodbye (odd as it may seem). Not only did they pack lunch for us on the road, but I received the sincerest hugs my soul needed. Two hugs, particularly those of our friend’s mom and aunt, were special. It was as if they had the power to heal what hurt my soul so much. I never imagined what I would feel when hugging them. It was so profound that even my partner, who is usually very oblivious, was moved to see those hugs that were a balm to move forward.

I will always be very, very grateful for the beauty of that trip, for the kindness of that entire family that welcomed us with open arms, and for the kindness of our friends for sharing their home with us. Infinite thanks to all those kind beings who crossed my path when I was most vulnerable and helped me heal.

Thank you for reading.

Have a great day! 😘
