41 BOOK: The Battles in the Desert (1981)

January 23, 2024

Author: José Emilio Pacheco (Mexico, 1939)

‘No one chooses how they are born, where they are born, when they are born, or to whom they are born.’

I believe this book should be mandatory reading for all Mexicans. It would help increase our low percentage of readership and make us fall even more in love with books. It’s also a book that captivates anyone not born in Mexico, leading them to learn more about the beginnings of modern Mexico and what runs through our veins.

🫣 I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it; this book unblocks me when I have my reading block. A few months ago, it was our book club’s choice, and we all enjoyed it a lot.

😍This novel beautifully and elegantly recounts Carlos’s first impossible love, a boy who captivates you immediately. With him, you relive the innocence and cruelty that characterise our childhood, moved by witnessing his love in a world that adults observe with prejudices. It also immerses you in his family story and transports you through that surreal Mexico with its customs, pains, and complexities.

👏🏾José Emilio Pacheco manages, in just 68 pages, to make you fall in love with literature.

After reading this book, you can listen to Café Tacvba’s song ‘Las Batallas,’ pure joy.

Thank you for reading.

Have a great day! 😘
